The canals were built for freight, but Nella’s night garden keeps a place for the creatures displaced by the new roads. A raccoon called Pip has borrowed her brass warning bell and hidden it beyond the market. Returning it means crossing the streets before the first courier shift begins. Nella leaves sheltered landings and little treats along the old water routes.
Pip’s midnight stash run follows twenty-nine crossings, from the market carts to frostwater locks beyond the last bridge. Couriers grow faster, logs become narrower, and diving turtles punish an impatient hop. The forgotten towpath carries more than cargo: its smallest traveler is bringing the city’s warning home.
Six crossings follow the brass bell through tributaries, lantern locks, orchard ferries, Raincourt and Tideglass. New currents and traffic extend the migration to thirty-five stages. Nella keeps the final landing open, and the returned bell becomes the courier’s last commemorative codex entry.
