BLACKWATER ARCHIVE

The three clocks beneath the aurora

A freight keeper preserves three independent time readings after ice severs the yard’s signal line.

Read today’s account

Aurora Pendulum Yard kept three clocks: one in the tower, one above the river siding and one inside the heated switch house. Every freight release required two matching times and a note from the third station.

During a hard freeze, the river clock stopped while a medicine car waited on the eastern rail. The keeper copied the tower time into a fresh ledger column, left the river entry blank and sent a runner to the switch house instead of guessing at the missing minute.

The runner returned with a watch reading seven minutes behind the tower and ice damage on the signal cable. The keeper held the car, repaired the line and preserved the disagreement in the final record. When the clocks were reset, the delay explained a switch that had not fully locked.

Blackwater crews still use the yard rule when shared systems go quiet: keep independent time, mark missing evidence plainly and record who carried the confirming observation. A safe departure begins with a record that admits what it did not know.
