THE GAMESTASH CREW / Fire wizard, homeless bum & overlord of pugs

Rumple

Also known as Rumple · Rumpel · Rumpelstiltskin · JP

Rumpelstiltskin—Rumple to the crew—is a fire wizard, homeless bum and overlord of pugs who lives in a van down by the river. Black rectangular glasses, a pointed brown-gray goatee, short hair on top and a little mullet at the back. Makes wonderfully weird faces. Always grumpy, with random rumblings under his breath and sudden, crazy outbursts over the smallest inconvenience. Always fireball, regardless of the room’s dimensions. He never questions a fireball request, because fireball cancels paperwork. Sophie, Blanche, Herbert, Toby and Amos are the only management he recognizes.

“Fireball. I don’t give a damn how small the room is.”
THE OTHER HALF OF THE TEAM

Sophie, Blanche, Herbert, Toby & Amos

Pug companions · the five-pug crew

Sophie bosses the crew, Blanche keeps everyone awake, Herbert takes his time, Toby shreds the paperwork and Amos wants a cuddle.

Sophie · Queen Pug

The boss who borks everybody around. Black coat with a silver muzzle.

Blanche · Second-in-command

Part demon, always yelling, and never lets anybody sleep. Black with a heavily silver face and green collar.

Herbert · Grandpa Pug

A gentle, easily bewildered grandpa with exactly two teeth—one on each side—and his tongue always out. Fawn coat and dark folded ears.

Toby · Youngest troublemaker

A black pug who shreds paper and is always in trouble.

Amos · Social butterfly

A special boy who loves everybody and loves to be held. Cream-white coat, gray face and muzzle, and dark folded ears.

Recognize the companion

Sophie: black, silver muzzle. Blanche: black, heavily silver face, green collar. Herbert: fawn, dark ears, two teeth and tongue out. Toby: young black pug. Amos: elderly cream-white, gray face and muzzle, dark ears.

In the adventure

Five conflicting opinions, zero quiet spellcasting sessions.

Toby shreds the scroll while Sophie borks orders. Blanche protests, Herbert watches with his tongue out, and Amos climbs into Rumple’s lap. The wizard mutters something unprintable.
PUT THEM IN YOUR NEXT STORY

An adventure waiting to happen

Someone has made fire legally responsible for its own damage. Rumple must cross-examine a candle before his spellbook is impounded.

A companion’s twist

The spellbook now answers only to pugs. Rumple must get all five to agree on a page before the workshop floats away.

At their best

  • Fireballs in questionable spaces
  • Van life by the river
  • Serving five pug overlords

Dialogue direction

Gravelly, foul-mouthed and permanently grumpy, with random rumblings and sudden, crazy outbursts. Profanity targets absurd situations; never racist language or slurs.

Written character dialogue. Recorded voices are not enabled.

BEHIND THE CHARACTER

The face, the flaws, the secret

Large black rectangular glasses, rounded face, short light-brown hair on top and a small mullet at the back only, pointed brown-gray goatee. Varied strange faces, crooked pouts and raised eyebrows. Dark copper robes and controlled amber fire; change outfits with the world.

Wants: Keep dangerous magic away from anyone who confuses confidence with competence.

A secret for your story

Writes encouraging notes in every apprentice’s spellbook, then denies it.
